Jump into it!

I have a question for the blogosphere, what do you think of the jumping mechanic in MMOs? It's something I've come to take for granted, every new MMO gives players the ability to jump right? In some of the games it looks ridiculous and in other ones it looks rather stylish. In PvP games it can be a serious source of annoyance and in PvE it can be used as part of a strategy.

But what if your favorite MMO was launching with no jumping? Would that feel restrictive? Immersion breaking? Or would you not even care? Or perhaps thank the Gods of gaming that for once you don't have to put up with bunny jumpers?
I ask because I have been getting in heated discussions with the FFXIV community, I think they really should have jumping while the majority thinks it's both unnecessary and would even contribute to things like lag (really now? O.O) and generally is a nuisance.

So I'm really curious to see what you think because honestly I'm baffled by the anti-jumping movement.

Develop the game in a way that jumping would benefit it, and I myself wouldn't have anything against it.

Or develop the game in a way that jumping won't be necessary and won't add any depth to the gameplay whatsoever, and I would be against adding it anyway.

From what I've seen so far, SE seems to have taken the latter approach with their game, so my stance is decided as well.

Well to be fair SE has only said that for the time being the game play is just like FFXI in the sense that the controls are the same (not the battle system ect..) BUT they were thinking about how to implement some sort of jumping action, maybe only when you need to overcome an obstacle, and other things like climbing and swimming.

So it's not 100% sure yet if there will be no jumping at all. Which is why it's so hotly debated, and I can't wait to hear either a firm yes or no. :)

Jumping can lead to unwarranted jumping (bunny hopping) which can have a detrimental effect on immersion, but then again I'm the type who constantly jumps in games like WoW when traveling a long distance on foot, just to entertain myself.

I usually don't miss it though in games that don't have it. Playing Lineage 2 right now and I wouldn't have even remembered that you can't jump in it if I hadn't of read this.
